I just saw Jonah Hex.  I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised.  I’ve been hurt far too much in the past by setting high expectations for comic book movies and coming out utterly frustrated with the filmmakers’ laziness.  Spiderman 3, anyone?  Venom was in my top 10 villains of all time until I saw that film.  It single-handedly destroyed his awesomeness factor.  And let’s not forget about emo Peter Parker?  I know it’s a black suit, but did we have to go that far?

And then there’s the comic book movies that just utterly destroyed their characters…like Fantastic Four or Hulk (the new one was okay, but the old one with Eric Bana sucked).

Anyway, back to Jonah Hex.  I started watching this film with 0 expectations.  I figured this is a comic book movie not directed by Zack Snyder (director of the great comic book movies like 300 and Watchmen, as well as the man entrusted with the next Superman film) and therefore won’t be very good.

I will start by saying that it isn’t the best comic book film out there, but it definitely held its own.  With Josh Brolin playing Jonah, a man who has everyone and everything he loves taken from him for his betrayal of the Confederate army, and the sultry Megan Fox playing the sexy saloon girl, Lilah, you can’t go wrong.

The wit, action and story of this film draw you in from beginning to end.  Hex is a man who has stared death in the face and lived.  He is bound by his vengeance to kill the man who took everything for him, Quinton Turnbull.  The story becomes a fun science-fiction alternate version of the post-Civil-War era.

It’s not the best film you’ll ever see but it’s worth seeing at least once.  I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of comic book films.
